Olympics: Waldrum ‘proud’ of Super Falcons, Nnadozie ‘sad’ after Spain defeat

SUPER Falcons of Nigeria head coach Randy Waldrum has admitted that his side could have done better against Spain in their Paris 2024 Olympics clash last night but praised their competitiveness.

The nine-time African champions lost 1-0 to the world champions in the women’s football event Group C encounter in Nantes, leaving them bottom of the pile with no points from two matches, following their opening defeat to Brazil.

The Super Falcons were undone by a spectacular free-kick by Alexia Putellas with five minutes left on the clock, but Waldrum’s side had glorious scoring opportunities before and after that goal, with Rasheedat Ajibade and Chinwendu Ihezuo misfiring.

“We had three to four good opportunities today, but regrettably we did not convert them,” Waldrum said during his post-match interview.

“We had one in the first half, a breakaway and Asisat and Rash (Ajibade) missed those chances. We had chances, regrettably, Spain converted theirs.

“We lost to two if the best teams in the world.  Spain is the best team in the world right now and Brazil are in the top 10.

“We have shown that we could have gotten something out of those matches. It shows we can play against anybody in the world.  So I am proud of the players.”

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, who has been one of the Super Falcons’ best players in France, took to social media to express her feelings about the defeat.

“Sad not to have got the result we wanted against Spain,” the Paris FC goalkeeper wrote on X today.

“We gave everything out on the pitch but we were unlucky. A big thanks to all the fans who supported us. Super proud of this team.”

The Super Falcons face elimination at the group phase except they defeat Japan on Wednesday and hope other results go their way.
