BOTSWANA’S Letsile Tebogo stunned a strong men’s 200m final field tonight to win gold at the Paris 2024 Olympics, beating favourite Noah Lyles, who was later discovered to have had Covid-19.
Meanwhile, the Team Nigeria trio in the women’s long jump final, led by Ese Brume, all failed to win a medal, also tonight.
In the men’s 200m, Tebogo produced a performance of a lifetime to clinch Africa’s first-ever gold in the event, clocking a very fast 19.46 seconds.
United States of America’s Kenneth Bednarek was second in 19.62s, while 100m gold medallist Lyles bagged bronze in 19.70s.
After the race, Lyles was tended to by medics who carted him off the track in a wheelchair suffering with what was later revealed to be a case of Covid.
Lyles, who is also asthmatic, contracted Covid two days ago but decided to still compete tonight.
In the women’s long jump, Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist Brume could only finish fifth this time with her best jump of 6.70m not good enough for a medal.
Her compatriots Ruth Usoro and Prestina Ochonogor finished even further back.
Usoro was 10th with 6.58m and Ochonogor 12th and last with 6.24m.
American Tara Davis-Woodhall won the gold medal with 7.10m, with Germany’s Malaika Mihambo clinching silver with 6.98m and another American Jasmine Moore bagging bronze with 6.96m.
