THE Nigeria Police Council today unanimously endorsed the appointment of Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police.
According to a statement by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, the ratification clears the way for President Bola Tinubu to formally swear Disu into office on Wednesday.
The ceremony is scheduled to take place during the Federal Executive Council meeting.
The Council meeting, held at the State House, was presided over by President Tinubu and attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, state governors, and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, retired DIG Hashimu Argungu, in line with constitutional provisions.
Other top officials present included the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; the Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Gaidam; the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike; and the Head of Service, Esther Didi Walson-Jack.
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu also lauded Disu’s track record, particularly his leadership of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos between 2015 and 2021, where the unit earned commendation for effective crime control.
Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule also applauded the appointment, describing it as merit-based and reflective of Disu’s professional record.
Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah seconded the motion endorsing the appointment.
President Tinubu had earlier appointed Disu as acting IGP on February 25, 2026, following the resignation of former police chief Kayode Egbetokun.
The President subsequently convened the Police Council meeting to formalise the appointment process.
Disu, 59, officially assumed office at a brief ceremony at the Louis Edet House in Abuja after being decorated by the President. Before his elevation, he served as Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Alagbon, Lagos, and was promoted to the rank of AIG last year.
Over the course of his career, Disu has held several strategic positions, including Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory.
He is also a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police and previously led the Intelligence Response Team of the Nigeria Police Force.
Born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos Island, Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992.
He has served as Divisional Police Officer in multiple states and commanded various anti-robbery and anti-kidnapping units across the country.
At the handover ceremony, Disu pledged to prioritise professionalism, modernisation, and accountability in the Force, assuring Nigerians of a more transparent and efficient policing system under his leadership.
