UK visit: Criticism of Tinubu’s policies stems from misinformation, mischief — Idris

THE Federal Government has said that some of the criticism directed at the policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu arises from inadequate understanding and, in some cases, deliberate mischief.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made this known during an engagement with international media representatives in the United Kingdom.

The interaction was organised ahead of the Nigerian president’s planned state visit to the country.

According to Idris, the administration recognises that its policies have attracted criticism, but he noted that some of the reactions are based on limited knowledge of the reforms and programmes introduced by the government.

He added that part of the delegation’s mission is to explain the policies implemented over the past few years and provide clarification where necessary.

The minister also highlighted the long-standing relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, describing it as one built on strong diplomatic, economic, cultural, and democratic foundations.

He said the upcoming state visit presents an opportunity to deepen cooperation in several key areas.

Idris noted that the trip would help expand collaboration in sectors such as trade and investment, security cooperation, climate action, education, and technological innovation.

He added that the visit also underscores Nigeria’s growing importance as a democratic and economic partner within Africa and on the global stage.

He further explained that the delegation made up of ministers and presidential aides—was engaging the international media to discuss the administration’s programmes, answer questions, and address areas where clarification may be needed.

During the visit, President Tinubu will be hosted by King Charles III in what observers describe as a significant moment in relations between both nations.

The programme is expected to combine ceremonial royal traditions with high-level meetings focused on strengthening economic, diplomatic, and strategic cooperation.

Ahead of the visit, King Charles recently hosted members of the Nigerian diaspora in the UK at a reception featuring Nigerian cuisine, including jollof rice, as well as live music by Dele Sosimi and the Afrobeats Orchestra.

The British royal family later described the gathering as “a wonderful evening,” thanking attendees for participating.

Security preparations have also been intensified ahead of the visit.

Authorities in the UK have imposed temporary airspace restrictions over Windsor Castle and are expected to deploy armed officers, search teams, mounted units, road policing teams, and additional surveillance resources across Windsor.

The invitation for the visit was earlier extended by King Charles in February. President Tinubu, accompanied by the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, accepted the invitation for the two-day state visit scheduled for March 18 to March 19, 2026.

The trip will mark the first state visit by a Nigerian leader to the United Kingdom in 37 years.
