WREXHAM goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo is now eligible to play for the Super Eagles after having his international switch of allegiance from England to Nigeria accepted by FIFA.

The 24-year-old was born in London to Nigerian parents and has represented England at youth level from U-15 to U-18.

Okonkwo started his career in the Arsenal Academy and played for the Gunners at U-18 and U-23 levels but never appeared for the first team.

He joined Wrexham on loan in 2023 and spent the season there before making the move permanent in the summer of 2024.

Okonkwo has made 42 appearances in all competitions for Wrexham this season, keeping 11 clean sheets as they chase promotion to the English Premier League.

The Welsh club are currently sixth in the Championship, the final promotion play-offs spot, ahead of tonight’s home clash against Southampton, who are one point and one place behind them.

Okonkwo will be in competition with currently unattached Stanley Nwabali and Udinese’s Maduka Okoye for the Super Eagles first choice spot.

In recent years, several players with Nigerian heritage have switched allegiances from England and had successful Super Eagles careers, including Victor Moses, Alex Iwobi and Ademola Lookman.
