A prominent group of Nigerian engineers has formally declared support for former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi as the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The group, known as “Engineers for Peter Obi 2027”, was convened in 2022 by Engr. Clement Ede Agege, a consulting engineer.

It aims to rally the entire Nigerian Engineering family – comprising engineers, technologists, technicians, and craftsmen – behind Obi’s candidacy.

In a statement, the promoters said their endorsement is rooted in Obi’s vision to transform Nigeria’s economy from a consumption-driven model to a production-oriented one, a shift they describe as a direct call to action for the nation’s technical professionals.

“Peter Obi represents the best opportunity to harness Nigeria’s engineering and technical capacity for real development,” Clement said on behalf of the group.

“His mantra of moving from consumption to production aligns perfectly with the role engineers must play in rebuilding the country.”

The group pointed to what it called the “obvious failures” of the current administration as reinforcing Obi’s credentials as a competent, tested leader with proven character and integrity.

They highlighted his national appeal, robust health, and lack of political baggage as key strengths for the demanding role of president.

A major boost to Obi’s ticket, according to the group, is his reported choice of Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso as running mate.

The statement emphasised Obi’s strategic political manoeuvres, including his move to the NDC, which the group said provided a “cleaner platform” to actualise his vision after navigating challenges in previous parties.

Real-time monitoring of party dynamics and legal hurdles, they noted, underscored the determination to secure a viable ballot position.

“Attempts to exclude him from the 2027 ballot failed, giving Nigerian voters the best alternative,” the group said.

“Peter Obi’s politics of integrity and national outlook transcends regional or tribal lines.”

Projecting strong performance, the engineers forecast that Obi will secure at least 40% of the vote in all states and the Federal Capital Territory, with dominant showings in at least 14 states he performed strongly in during the 2023 election, potentially clinching victory in the first round.

On policy, the group highlighted Obi’s deep knowledge of the Nigerian economy and his study of successful developing nations.

The Obidient movement and the Kwankwasiya youth network were described as “hardline organic supporters” ready to drive voter registration and mobilisation.

“They feel safe in his hands and are committed to national interest through job creation and good governance,” the statement added, citing Rwanda as an example of effective leadership transcending complexity.
