On Wednesday, the Wole Soyinka International Cultural Exchange (WSICE) gathers at the Autonomous Republic of Ijegba (ARI), Abeokuta—a space deliberately conceived as one of intellectual independence, where Professor Wole Soyinka has consistently challenged convention and nurtured generations through culture, ideas, and fearless inquiry.
Then, on Friday, the conversation crosses continents to The Africa Centre (TAC), London — an institution that has, for decades, stood as a cultural home for Africa in one of the world’s most multicultural cities.
One venue sits in the world’s most populous Black nation. The other stands at the crossroads of one of world’s most culturally diverse societies.
Is this remarkable symmetry merely a coincidence?
Or does it speak a deeper language — one that reminds us that authentic cultural engagement flourishes where ideas are free, identities are respected, and dialogue is encouraged?
These are questions we shall continue to interrogate.
For this very reason, culture must not only be exchanged; it must be engaged. It must be questioned, interpreted, challenged, celebrated, and ultimately lived.
