A Federal High Court in Kano has sentenced 28-year-old Ashiru Idris to seven years in prison without the option of a fine for using social media to advertise cannabis for sale.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) announced the conviction in a statement issued by the Media and Advocacy Officer of its Kano Strategic Command, Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari.
According to the agency, Justice S.M. Shuaibu delivered the judgment on July 14, 2026, ordering that the prison term begin from the date of the ruling.
The NDLEA said Idris was arrested on April 22, 2026, after operatives of the Kano Strategic Command tracked him through a viral social media video in which he openly promoted cannabis for sale.
The operation was carried out on the directive of the State Commander, CN DY Lawal.
Describing the ruling as a landmark judgment, the agency said it highlights the legal consequences of using digital platforms to promote illegal drugs.
Reacting to the conviction, Kano State NDLEA Commander, CN DY Lawal, said the judgment sends a strong warning to those involved in the illegal drug trade.
He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to taking swift action against anyone who openly promotes illicit substances and ensuring that offenders are prosecuted.
The NDLEA also urged members of the public to support efforts against drug trafficking and substance abuse by providing credible information that can assist security agencies in combating drug-related crimes.
