ACCORDING to authorities, at least 17 young people were discovered dead on Sunday inside a nightclub in a township in the southern city of East London, South Africa.
“We got a report about 17 (people) that died in a local tavern in Scenery Park which is based in East London,” a provincial police chief brigadier Thembinkosi Kinana told AFP.
“We are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident,” he added.
The victims, according to him, were between the ages of 18 and 20.
Unverified images posted on social media showed bodies strewn around the club’s floor with no obvious signs of trauma.
A group of people had gathered outside the club in the city, which is located on the Indian Ocean coast which is about 620 miles (about 1,000 kilometers) south of Johannesburg, and local television showed police officials attempting to disperse them.
