SUPER Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi wore the special captain’s armband for Leicester City today as they lost 1-0 at home to Arsenal in their Premier League clash at the King Power Stadium.
The Nigeria international donned an armband that honoured Ukraine on the one year anniversary of the country’s invasion by Russia, which led to a war that is still ongoing.
The occasion did not end on a happy note for Ndidi, however, with Gabriel Martinelli netting the only goal as Arsenal extended their lead at the top of the standings to five points.
Martinelli struck one minute after the break to earn the Gunners their 10th away win of the campaign, one more than they won the whole of last season.
Ndidi’s fellow Nigeria international Kelechi Iheanacho was also on from the start as Leicester City suffered their second straight defeat.
Both Super Eagles stars did not play the full game, with Iheanacho, who scored an illegitimate goal from an offside position, making way in the 62nd minute, and Ndidi 15 minutes later.
In other Premier League fixtures involving Nigerian stars today, Paul Onuachu and Alex Iwobi both lost with Southampton and Everton respectively.
Onuachu started and played for 63 minutes as he searched for his first goal since joining the Saints from Genk, with Junior Firpo netting for hosts Leeds United in the 77th minute.
At Goodison Park, Iwobi lasted 70 minutes as Everton lost 2-0 to Aston Villa, Ollie Watkins and Emiliano Buendia scoring for the visitors.
Southampton and Everton are in the relegation zone, with the former bottom and the latter 18th.
In the other Premier League game today, West Ham United scored all their goals in the final 20 minutes to defeat Nottingham Forest 4-0 at the London City Stadium and climb out of the drop zone.
Super Eagles forward Emmanuel Dennis was an unused substitute while Taiwo Awoniyi is still out with a long-term injury for Forest.
