Distinguished Guests and Ambassadors of the Arts,

AS we embark on this momentous occasion—the inauguration of the Abuja International Theatre Festival and Awards—we cast our gaze upon a global stage adorned with the brilliance of countless international theatre festivals. These events, scattered across the world, stand as beacons of cultural exchange, celebration, and unity. Today, we step onto this stage with the theme “Performing Arts, Peacebuilding, and the Society,” recognizing the transformative power that these festivals wield.

In echoing the successes of international theatre festivals from Edinburgh to Avignon, we underscore the immense potential of such gatherings to showcase the diverse tapestry of human expression. We witness the power of the performing arts as a universal language, uniting hearts and minds beyond geographical boundaries. It is in this spirit that we convene here, to add our chapter to the global narrative of artistic brilliance and societal enrichment.

As we gather here under the theme, “Performing Arts, Peacebuilding, and the Society,” we embark on a journey that celebrates not just the richness of our artistic expressions but recognises the transformative power of the performing arts in fostering peace and unity within our society. In this vibrant tapestry of creativity, we find a force that transcends borders, language, and cultural differences. The performing arts have the unique ability to be a universal language, a bridge that connects hearts and minds, and a catalyst for positive change. Today, we acknowledge the pivotal role that the performing arts play in shaping our collective narrative, fostering understanding, and building bridges that lead us towards a more harmonious world.

In this endeavour, I call upon the esteemed Ministries of the Federal Capital Territory, Arts & Culture, and Tourism to rally behind this initiative. Just as renowned festivals globally enjoy the support of their governments, let us recognize the imperative for our Ministries to champion the cause of the arts. Adequate funding is not merely a fiscal concern; it is an investment in our cultural identity, a commitment to nurturing the talents that elevate our nation onto the international stage.

In alignment with international best practices, where governments wholeheartedly back their artistic communities, we should strive to emulate such support structures. The Ministry of FCT, Ministry of Arts & Culture, and Ministry of Tourism possess the instrumental capacity to transform this festival into a catalyst for tourism, cultural exchange, and economic growth. Let us channel our efforts towards making this festival a cornerstone of our national identity.

As we witness the unfolding of performances that will grace this stage, let us not only revel in the spectacle but also reflect upon the pivotal role that government support plays in the success of such ventures globally. By aligning our ministries with this cause, we send a resounding message—to our artists, to the international community, and to our citizens—that we recognize and value the transformative power of the performing arts.

May this festival not only dazzle our senses but also serve as a rallying cry for increased government backing of the arts. Let us create an environment where the performing arts thrive, bridging cultures, fostering peace, and propelling our society towards greater heights.

Today, I stand on the threshold of a golden opportunity to connect with all of you, and I anticipate a future where I immerse myself in the world of stage plays—be it through writing, acting (yes, with a laugh), or producing. Having found my place as a writer, this feels like a natural progression.

Since my retirement from the military, I have ventured into various aspects of life, and one significant avenue has been art patronage. Besides my writing endeavors (mostly non-creative), well-wishers Dr. MS. Abubakar, Dr. Lizzy Iheanacho and our dear Jerry Adesewo, have come together to establish the TY Buratai Literary Initiative, a non-governmental organization that I am immensely proud to be associated with. This initiative will serve as my platform to engage with the rich tapestry of the culture and creative industry.

To winners of the various competitions to be announced here today, and recipients of the awards of honour, I say congratulations to you all, or shall I say…. to us all.

To the international delegates from Jamaica, United Kingdom and Romania, Ukraine, Zimbabwe and Cameroon, I’ll say, welcome to Nigeria and do enjoy yourself.

May the Abuja International Theatre Festival and Awards mark the beginning of a new era for the performing arts in our nation, and especially the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Thank you, all!
