THE Senate has summoned security leaders and others in connection with the Christmas Eve killings in Plateau State.
The Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ahmed Rufai Abubakar, the Director General of the Department of State Services, Yusuf Bichi, and the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu have all been summoned.
This action was prompted by a motion introduced today by Senator Adams Oshiomhole at plenary.
He stated that they must provide adequate explanations for the inadequate intelligence, adding that Nigerians are upset with them, therefore the need to convene the security chiefs in a closed session to advise the Senate on the real situation.
Senator Sumaila Kawu seconded the measure.
The Senate bemoaned the ongoing criminal attacks on communities in Plateau State, calling for a national security summit.
The upper house debated the killings in Plateau State in response to a resolution introduced by Senator Diket Plang,
Following the debate, the Senate agreed to observe a minute of silence in memory of the victims.
The lawmakers also urge the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to direct its agencies to provide immediate relief materials, particularly building materials, to victims of the crisis, allowing them to return to their homes and decongest IDP camps.
They also called on the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to finish the Mopol Barracks in Barkin Ladi LGA.
In an amended prayer, the Senate requests that the Nigerian military deploy intelligence and aerial assets in the impacted LGAs of Plateau State and its environs.
On Christmas Eve, gunmen assaulted over 15 settlements in the state’s Bokkos and Barkin-Ladi Local Government Areas, killing over 190 people.
The attackers on Sunday night set fire to several residences. The gun-wielding, bloodthirsty men also took farm products and destroyed property while slaughtering the residents. There has been no claim of responsibility for the horrific attack.
