THE Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in a recent development, has made a decision to ease some sanctions imposed on Niger Republic, Mali, and Guinea.
This decision was reached during an extraordinary summit held in Abuja to address the peace, political, and security situation in the region.
While political and targeted sanctions on Niger Republic will remain in place, ECOWAS has decided to lift some financial and economic sanctions on Guinea, as well as other sanctions on Mali.
The sanctions were initially imposed following the military coup in Niger Republic that led to the overthrow of President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26, 2023.
During a press briefing after the summit, ECOWAS Commission President Omar Alieu Touray outlined the specific sanctions that the organization has resolved to lift.
These include the reopening of land and air borders between ECOWAS countries and Niger Republic, allowing commercial flights to and from Niger Republic, resuming commercial and financial transactions between ECOWAS member states and Niger Republic, and unfreezing assets of Niger Republic in ECOWAS Central banks.
Additionally, the sanctions involving the freezing of assets of Niger Republic and state enterprises in commercial banks, suspension of financial assistance to Niger Republic, and travel bans on military officials and their families linked to the coup attempt have also been lifted.
Touray emphasized that the decision to ease sanctions was driven by humanitarian considerations, particularly with the observance of Lent and the upcoming holy month of Ramadan.
Furthermore, ECOWAS has decided to lift restrictions on the recruitment of Malian citizens for positions within the organization and to remove financial and economic sanctions on Guinea.
The ECOWAS President announced that Burkina Faso, Niger, Mali, and Guinea have been invited to participate in technical and consultative meetings of ECOWAS and security-related discussions.
The organization has instructed all its institutions, member states, and regional bodies to implement these decisions promptly.
