RIVERS United have announced Finidi George as their new head coach just weeks after he quit as Super Eagles boss.
The Nigeria Premier Football League club confirmed the ex-international’s appointment today as he replaces the long-serving Stanley Eguma, who was sacked before the season ended in June.
“Rivers United Football Club is pleased to announce the appointment of Finidi George as our new Technical Manager,” the club said in an official statement today.
“Finidi brings a wealth of experience and expertise to our team, having had a distinguished playing career spanning over fifteen years.
“His impressive credentials include winning the Africa Cup of Nations with the Super Eagles in 1994, the UEFA Champions League with Ajax in 1995, and the Nigeria Premier Football League with Enyimba International FC in 2023.”
Rivers United finished a disappointing eighth last season, two years after they won the NPFL title, and Finidi promised to restore the glory days.
“I am honoured to have this opportunity, and I thank the Sports Commissioner, the General Manager, and the supporters for their confidence in me. I am committed to working hard and making the team win,” the 53-year-old said.
Rivers United General Manager Dr. Okey Kpalukwu welcomed Finidi, stating: “We are delighted to have Finidi George join our team. His appointment marks a new chapter in our club’s history, and we are committed to working together to achieve success.”
Finidi will be officially presented to Rivers United fans tomorrow afternoon at the Sharks Stadium in Port Harcourt.
He was in charge of the Super Eagles for just four matches — two of them friendlies when he was in a caretaker role — winning one, losing two and drawing one.
Finidi quit the national team role last month after the Nigeria Football Federation decided to employ a foreign ‘technical adviser’ to supervise him and made the announcement before informing him first.
