SOUTH AFRICA head coach Hugo Broos praised his players after the team secured their passage into the round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Bafana Bafana advanced past the World Cup group stage for the first ever following their 1-0 victory over South Korea in Monterrey, Mexico in the early hours of today.
Broos’ side finished second behind co-hosts Mexico in Group A with four points, while South Korea are third and waiting to see if they will progress as one of the eight best third-placed teams.
“I think we played a very good game, tactically. It was very good and everybody did their job. The difference with this game and our previous match (against Czechia) was that when we had the ball we were very dangerous, and that was a very important,” Broos said in his post-match interview.
“We had very quick players on the pitch, and we used them very well. We found the spaces during the good moments. And then yeah, we needed that goal.
“We had a few chances in the first half, and I told the players at halftime to keep on believing. I am very proud of the performance of my team.”
South Africa had never gone past the group stages of the global tournament after falling by the wayside in the opening stages of the 1998, 2002 and 2010 World Cups.
They South are due to face World Cup co-hosts Canada in the round of 32 in Los Angeles on Sunday.
