GUNMEN at about 11.30am today set on fire another building of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Imo State..
INEC national commissioner in-charge of information and voter education, Festus Okoye, confirmed the incident in a statement.
He said “although no life was lost, the building was substantially burnt down, along with electoral materials, office equipment and furniture.”
The electoral commission had posted video clips on its Twitter page, which showed the building after the attack.
Recall that another INEC office was attacked seven days ago in Ahiazu Mbaise Local Government Area of the state.
Today’s incident takes the number of attacked INEC offices nationwide to 42 in the space of barely three years.
“It is also the 8th INEC office to be attacked in Imo State since the 2019 General Election,” Okoye said.
He added that “INEC buildings, infrastructures and equipment are critical national assets that guarantee the continuity of electoral activities throughout the federation. Attacking these offices is not in the national interest and has the capacity of compromising electoral activities and the credibility of the electoral process.”
