Netflix to implement charges to curb password sharing

STREAMING giant, Netflix has moved to stem password sharing among members and outsiders as it plans to implement the proposed charges.

This was announced in a statement on its site on Wednesday, March 16, 2022 with the notice “Paying to Share Netflix Outside Your Household.”

According to the statement, features like separate profiles and multiple streams in their Standard and Premium plans have “created some confusion about when and how Netflix can be shared.”

“As a result, accounts are being shared between households — impacting our ability to invest in great new TV and films for our members.”

The director of product innovation Chengyi Long confirmed that the company is launching and testing new features geared toward curbing password sharing, in which subscribers will be able to “add sub accounts for up to two people they don’t live with” for an added price.

This is to enable members who share their Netflix accounts outside their household to do so easily and securely, while also paying a little extra.

The new changes will start in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru before being effected anywhere else in the world. According to the Netflix site, the price increase for adding sub accounts will be 2,380 CLP in Chile, $2.99 USD in Costa Rica, and 7.9 PEN in Peru.
