Rangnick set to accept Austria offer after Man United, Chelsea draw

INTERIM Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick is considering an offer to take over as Austria’s national team boss.

BBC Sport reported on Thursday a decision could be made as early as Friday.

But if the 63-year-old accepts, it would not necessarily impact on his planned consultancy role at Manchester United from next season.

Rangnick has three games left as interim United manager, after Thursday’s home match against Chelsea, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

Marcos Alonso opened the scoring for the dominant visitors at Old Trafford in the 60th minute but Cristiano Ronaldo pulled United level two minutes later with his 17th goal of the league campaign, his first-ever against Chelsea in the Premier League.

Rangnick has also agreed a consultant’s role beyond the end of this season with United, working for six days a month.

It is understood the German was happy with that commitment because he was interested in working in the international game.

Rangnick came to United in November in the hope of rescuing their season.

However, results have been a major disappointment, with the German conceding United have virtually no chance of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.

Speaking after the Chelsea game, Rangnick said: “Let us speak tonight about Manchester United, this is the issue. I can confirm I will definitely continue in the consultancy role.

“So far me and [incoming United manager] Erik [ten Hag] haven’t spoken. But I am more than happy and willing to help and change things for the better.

“It would leave space for another job but that is what we agreed in November last year.”
