Flying Eagles ease past Benin Republic to win WAFU B U-20 title

THE Flying Eagles are the new U-20 champions of the West Africa B Zone following last night’s 3-1 victory over the Young Squirrels of Benin Republic in the final of the WAFU B U-20 Championship in Niamey, Niger Republic.

Tolulope Ojo scored twice, with Ibrahim Muhammad adding the other goal as the Nigerian boys cruised to victory at the Stade General Seyni Kountche in the Nigerien capital city.

Man of the match Ojo got the victory party started in the 38th minute with a superb finish as the Flying Eagles took control of the final.

The Remo Stars player doubled Nigeria’s advantage 17 minutes into the second half and Ladan Bosso’s side looked unstoppable.

Muhammad made sure of the win in the 74th minute with a clever chip over the Benin Republic goalkeeper, and the celebrations began.

The Junior Squirrels got themselves a consolation goal towards the end of the match but it was too little, too late as the Flying Eagles soared to a well-deserved victory.

Benin Republic, who had topped Group A ahead of Niger Republic, Cote d’Ivoire and Togo before beating Burkina Faso in the semi-finals, will be attending the 2023 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt along with the Flying Eagles.

The Nigerian side had a similar path to the final with Benin Republic, topping Group B with a win over Ghana and a draw with Burkina Faso before seeing off Cote d’Ivoire in extra-time in the semi-finals.

The Flying Eagles will be gunning for their eighth African title at the 2023 U-20 AFCON.

The four semi-finalists from the continental tournament in Egypt will qualify for the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup scheduled for Indonesia.
