Wike rewards NPFL champions Rivers United with N12m each, trip to Spain

The Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has announced some mouthwatering rewards for Rivers United players and coaching staff for winning the 2021/2022 Nigeria Professional Football League title.

The Rivers State-owned club were presented with their first-ever NPFL trophy last weekend after topping the table ahead of Plateau United.

The players and crew were treated to a reception in Port Harcourt today, where Wike announced the rewards.

Chief among the rewards is the award of $20,000 (about N12 million) to each of the players involved in the league campaign and their coaches.

The governor also promised that the state will sponsor the team to two weeks of pre-season training in Madrid, Spain, leveraging on Rivers’ technical partnership with European champions Real Madrid.

Wike also gave each player a Governor Medal Service award for their service to Rivers State.

By winning the NPFL title, Rivers United qualified for the CAF Champions League next season, and Wike has charged them to excel in the competition, which Nigerian clubs have struggled in since Enyimba won it back-to-back in 2003 and 2004.

To encourage them to do well in the continent’s top club competition, Wike has promised to double their reward if they reach the group stages of the CAF Champions League.

Rivers United were founded in 2016 by the state government following the merger of the two state-owned clubs, Sharks FC and Dolphins FC.
