Team Nigeria clinched their second gold medal at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games today as Rafiatu Folashade Lawal won her event.

Lawal lifted a combined 205kg to beat all the other competitors in the women’s weightlifting 59kg category.

Her effort is also a new Games record as she followed in the footsteps of Adijat Adenike Olarinoye, who also won gold last night and set a new record in the women’s 55kg class.

Team Nigeria have now won three medals in Birmingham, all coming from weightlifting: Lawal’s and Olarinoye’s gold as well as Edidiong Umoafia’s bronze in men’s 67kg.

There has been more good news for Team Nigeria in Birmingham today, with a boxer advancing to the next round.

In a middleweight bout, Adeyinka Benson defeated his Ghanian counterpart Kwesi Quartey by points (3-2) to reach the quarter-finals.

If Benson wins his next bout, he will be guaranteed at least a bronze medal.
