Pillars, Lobi, Nasarawa battle for semi-final slots in rearranged AITEO Cup

The cities of Jos, Kaduna and Abuja will host rescheduled quarter-final matches of the AITEO Cup competition (Nigeria’s FA Cup) tomorrow, with Nigeria Professional Football League sides Lobi Stars, Wikki Tourists and Nasarawa United as well as relegated Kano Pillars among those in action.

Niger Tornadoes will battle Lobi Stars in Jos for a spot in the semi-finals while Wikki Tourists and Nasarawa United will clash in Kaduna.

Kogi United, the surprise team of this year’s competition, are up against Kano Pillars at the Area 3 Stadium, Abuja.

The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation, at its meeting of August 18, had adopted the resolutions of a peace meeting of club representatives with NFF officials that agreed to a rearranging of the competition from the quarter-final stage after NPFL clubs withdrew over a lack of continental reward.

The teams had felt there was no need to continue with the traditional cup competition after its winners’ normal slot in the CAF Confederation Cup was awarded to Kwara United for finishing fourth in the NPFL.

The NFF put Kwara United forward as Nigeria’s second club in the continental cup in order to beat the deadline for the submission of representatives to the Confederation of African Football.

A notice to Football Associations of the states hosting the quarter-final matches has clarified that the fourth match between Heartland FC of Owerri and Katsina United FC is determined to have been won and lost, with Heartland FC the winners and already in possession of a semi-final ticket.
