I’ll never forget my goal against Liverpool — ‘Grateful’ Awoniyi

Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi has said he will forever remember the moment he scored against Liverpool.

The Nigeria international netted the only goal yesterday to help Nottingham Forest to a shock 1-0 victory over Liverpool at City Ground.

The goal was special to Awoniyi because he was contracted to Liverpool for six years, although he never made a first team appearance until his permanent transfer to Union Berlin in 2021.

“For me I’m happy but the most important thing is the three points. Now we have to build on it,” Awoniyi said in his post-match interview.

“To score against Liverpool is a day I will never forget. I will always to be grateful to Liverpool for scouting me from Nigeria and scoring against them is amazing.”

Forest’s victory followed a 0-0 draw against Brighton in midweek and took them off the bottom of the Premier League table.

Awoniyi hopes he and his colleagues can consolidate as they continue to fight against returning to the Championship.

“This kind of game we have to look back on it and build on it. The game is over and now we concentrate on the next one,” he added.

Awoniyi, who barely celebrated his goal because of his Liverpool connection, was congratulated by Reds manager Juergen Klopp.

“He had a sensational development. He has arrived where he belongs and I am happy for him, but not today so much,” the German said.

Awoniyi, 25, joined Liverpool in 2015 but spent his entire time at the club on loan spells at Frankfurt in Germany, NEC Nijmegen in Holland, Mouscron and KAA Gent in Belgium, as well as Mainz and Union Berlin in Germany.

He joined Union Berlin for €8.5 million in July 2021 after a successful loan stint there. The Bundesliga club sold him to Nottingham Forest this July for €20.5m.
