The Flamingos will seek to make history tomorrow (Wednesday) when they face Colombia in one of the semi-finals of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in India.
The big clash will be held at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Goa, where the Flamingos have played before. The game kicks off at 12 noon Nigerian time.
The Nigerian girls have already made their mark on the tournament by becoming the first set from their country and continent to reach the semi-finals after they beat the United States of America on penalties on Friday.
Now they are on a quest to go all the way by first seeing off Colombia, who swatted aside another African team, Tanzania, 3-0 in the quarter-finals.
The girls will be cheered on by Nigeria Football Federation president Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, who has arrived in India for the tournament.
Nigeria is also the only African country to have played in the final of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
The first time was in Germany in 2010, when the Falconets lost 2-0 to the hosts, and the second time was in Canada in 2014, when the Germans again won after extra-time in Montreal.
Tomorrow, history-making coach Bankole Olowookere will again bank on goalkeeper Faith Omilana, defenders Miracle Usani, Tumininu Adeshina, Comfort Folorunsho and Blessing Emmanuel, midfielders Taiwo Afolabi, Alvine Dah-Zossu and Blessing Sunday, as well as forwards Opeyemi Ajakaye, Edidiong Etim and Aminat Bello.
The Flamingos have scored a total of eight goals in open play and conceded four, striking a good balance between defence and attack.
