Marcus Rashford scored twice tonight to lead England to a 3-0 win over Wales, while the United States of America defeated Iran 1-0 in the final games of Qatar 2022 World Cup Group B.

With the results, England topped the group with seven points, followed by USA on five points as both progressed to the round of 16.

England will face African champions Senegal on Sunday, with USA battling Holland on Saturday.

Manchester United forward Rashford opened the scoring for England at the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium in the second half after a tepid opening period produced no goals.

He struck a direct free-kick beyond the reaches of Wales goalkeeper Danny Ward five minutes into the second half as England stepped up their game.

England were 2-0 up one minute later as Harry Kane set up Phil Foden for a simple finish, and Wales’ hopes of a miraculous recovery were dashed.

Rashford then netted again in the 68th minute, his low shot slipping through Ward’s legs.

The goal was Rashford’s third in Qatar, and more symbolically England’s 100th in their World Cup history.

In the other Group B clash that kicked off at the same time at the Al Thumama Stadium, Christian Pulisic scored the only goal to steer USA past Iran.

The Chelsea forward struck from close range in the 38th minute and USA withstood pressure from the desperate Iranians, who needed only a draw to advance.

Iran finished third in the group with three points, with Wales bottom with one point.
