Governor Wike redeems pledge, rewards Rivers United players, officials with $20k each

GOVERNOR Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has fulfilled his promise to Rivers United for winning last season’s Nigeria Professional Football League title.

The governor fulfilled his pledge last night by handing out $20,000 each to 47 players and officials who were involved as the club emerged Nigerian champions earlier this year, according to a press release today signed by Sammy Wejinya, Senior Special Adviser to the Rivers State Commissioner of Sports, Christopher Green.

Wike had commended the Rivers United team for making the state proud and conferred them with the Governor’s Medal of Service (GMS), which is the third-highest distinction in Rivers State Order given to individuals in recognition of their exceptional service/performance in any field of human endeavor.

“To ensure that you are prepared for the CAF competition, each of you will go home with twenty thousand dollars,” he had declared when hosting the team earlier in the year.

While redeeming the pledge, the governor, who was represented by Green during a brief ceremony at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt, charged players and officials of the club to continue to be great ambassadors.

“We have the best governor in Nigeria and he will not relent in supporting this team so I urge us all to continue to be great ambassadors of Rivers State,” Green stated.

Rivers United are the only Nigerian club still left in CAF club competition this season.

They are are in the group stages of the CAF Confederation Cup where they will battle Diables Noirs (Congo Brazzaville), DC Motemba Pembe (Congo Democratic Republic) and ASEC Mimosas (Cote d’Ivoire) for quarter-final spots.
