Chelsea’s slump continues with defeat to Tottenham

CHELSEA have suffered yet another defeat, losing 2-0 to Tottenham Hotspur in their Premier League clash at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium today.

It is Graham Potter’s side’s second straight Premier League defeat after they were stunned 1-0 by bottom club Southampton last week.

Oliver Skipp and Harry Kane struck to pile on more pressure on Potter, who has seen his side get even worse after spending over £300 million on new signings in January.

Spurs struck twice in the second half, after a goalless first half in which Chelsea could have been down to 10 men.

Hakim Ziyech was shown a straight red card for violent conduct, but after reviewing the incident on the pitchside monitor, referee Stuart Atwell changed his mind and instead gave the Morocco winger a yellow card.

Spurs then took the lead in the first minute after resumption, with Skipp firing his first goal for the club from distance.

Skipp’s goal was scored 19 seconds into the second half, the earliest such goal has been recorded in a Premier League game since Gerard Deulofeu for Watford against West Ham in May 2019.

Kane made the points safe in the 82nd minute from close range, registering his 18th goal in the Premier League and 20th in all competitions this season.

The England captain is one of only two players to score 20 or more goals in each of the last nine seasons in all competitions for clubs in Europe’s big-five leagues, along with Robert Lewandowski, according to Opta statistics.

Chelsea, who remain 10th in the Premier League, have won only two of their last 15 games since early November, and have scored six goals in their last 12 league games, the fewest in the competition in the last three months.

Spurs remain in fourth place but closed the gap on third-placed Manchester United to four points, while extending their advantage over fifth-placed Newcastle United also to four points.
