THE delegation of president Buhari led by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory gave a $1 million support fund to the Turkish government.

The Turkish Foreign Affairs Minister, Ambassador Mevlüt avuşolu, visited Bello and other members of the group at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Ankara, Turkey’s capital.

The visit came on the heels of the horrific 7.8-magnitude earthquake on February 6, which killed around 50,000 people, including Christian Atsu, a former Chelsea and Ghanaian footballer.

According to Bello, due to the general election in Nigeria, Buhari was unable to personally conduct a condolence visit to the country.

The FCT minister on behalf of the government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria offered the president profound sympathies to the government and people of Turkey in the wake of the catastrophic earthquake.

The minister also sent over Buhari’s sympathy letter as well as a $1,000,000 Central Bank of Nigeria Promissory Note for transmission to President Recep Tayyip Erdoan.

He explained that the symbol was a gift from the Nigerian government to help with ongoing humanitarian efforts to mitigate the impacts of the devastating earthquake.

Meanwhile, the Turkish Foreign Minister explained in his remarks that President Erdoan was unable to personally greet the delegation due to the demands of directly overseeing humanitarian efforts in the 11 quake-affected southern provinces of Adana, Adiyaman, Diyarbakir, Gaziantep, Hatay, Kahramanmaras, Kilis, Malatya, Osmaniye, Sanliurfa, and Elazig.

The minister thanked Buhari, the government, and the people of Nigeria for their solidarity, financial, and material support to the Republic of Turkey during these difficult times.
