THE Super Falcons defeated Haiti 2-1 in a friendly in Antalya, Turkey today as both sides continued their preparations for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand in July and August.

It is the second straight victory for the nine-time African champions following their recent win over Costa Rica, which ended a run of seven defeats.

Esther Okoronkwo and Asisat Oshoala struck for Nigeria in either half to ease the pressure on head coach Randy Waldrum.

After a positive start from the Super Falcons during which Oshoala had a goal disallowed and Rasheedat Ajibade hit the woodwork, the Nigerians took the lead five minutes before half-time.

Okoronkwo took a free-kick from a tight angle but went for goal and succeeded, her fierce shot sailing past everyone into the net.

Haiti almost levelled the tie 10 minutes into the second half but Tosin Demehin’s headed clearance preserved Nigeria’s slim advantage.

The Super Falcons kept on the front foot against the Women’s World Cup debutants and got rewarded just before the hour mark when Barcelona striker Oshoala converted from close range off a corner kick.

Haiti refused to go away and pulled one back in the 75th minute after a defensive mix-up, but the Super Falcons held on for the victory.

Next up for the Super Falcons are World Cup co-hosts New Zealand on Tuesday, also in Antalya, Turkey.

Nigeria are in Group B at the World Cup alongside Olympic champions Canada, co-hosts Australia and newcomers Republic of Ireland.
