Asisat Oshoala nominated for Ballon d’Or, vies with Rashford, Vinicius

ASISAT Oshoala has been nominated for one of the categories of the prestigious Ballon d’Or award, with Marcus Rashford and Vinicius Jr among the other nominees for the same honour.

The Super Falcons striker is one of the five nominees for the Socrates Award (named after the late Brazilian great), which “identifies the best solidarity actions carried by committed champions”, according to Ballon d’Or organisers France Football.

The other nominees in the category are Manchester United star Rashford, Vinicius Jr of Real Madrid and his club mate Antonio Rudiger, as well as United States Women’s National Team star Alex Morgan.

The 28-year-old Barcelona star and Nigeria international is nominated for her Asisat Oshoala Academy, which helps in shaping the future of young girls in Lagos through football and education.

In Oshoala’s citation which was published today, France Football writes: “The Asisat Oshoala Academy aims to give access to its beneficiaries to high quality football training as well as education on life skills.

“The organisation’s will is to empower young women through both sports and education, and to turn the beneficiaries into role models for the community and ambassadors of the values and skills they learnt.”

Morgan and Rudiger are nominated for their foundations which also help children through sports, education and funds in the United States of America and Sierra Leone respectively.

On his part, Rashford is nominated for his role in ensuring millions of British children were fed during the Covid-19 pandemic, while Vinicius Jr is being honoured for his fight against racial discrimination globally and social inequalities in Brazil.

The winners of the Socrates Award and other Ballon d’Or prizes will be named on September 6.
