D’Tigers ease past Gabon into AfroCan quarter-finals

D’TIGERS advanced into the quarter-finals of the AfroCan basketball tournament today with a 71-55 victory over Gabon in Luanda, Angola.

The Nigerian men shrugged off Monday’s defeat to hosts Angola to post their best performance of the competition and proceed to the last eight of the competition, which is for African national teams featuring only home-based players.

After an even first quarter which ended 18 apiece, Nigeria took control and finished the first half with an 11-point advantage.

Gabon fought back in the third quarter and slightly reduced the gap by one point, but Ogoh Odaudu’s men were back in charge in the final quarter to close out the game with a 16-point win.

Ibeabuchi Agu stepped up today to lead D’Tigers in scoring with a game-high 13 points, while Chinedu Chimbo was the leader in both rebounds and assists with 7 and 6 respectively.

Farrel-Drexler Dimidimba starred for Gabon, outscoring his teammates with 12 points and producing a game-high 9 assists.

Nigeria will face defending champions Democratic Republic of Congo in the quarter-finals tomorrow.

DR Congo cruised into the quarter-finals after beating Cameroon and Mozambique in their Group D clashes and are favourites to stop D’Tigers.
