THE sports minister John Enoh has landed in Lagos from his Abuja base to assess the level of work that still needs to be done on the iconic National Stadium, Surulere.
Enoh, who was recently appointed as successor to Sunday Dare, will inspect the facilities within the once great edifice, which has been undergoing rehabilitation for some time.
He is in the old Nigerian capital along with the Permanent Secretary in the ministry Mallam Ismaila, and former Super Eagles striker Daniel Amokachi.
The minister arrived in Lagos last night and revealed that, apart from the National Stadium facilities inspection, he would meet with some ‘stakeholders’ in Nigerian sports.
“While in Lagos, I am also expected to meet with key stakeholders within the sporting ecosystem which includes- the leadership of the various sports federations, athlete’s representatives, the sports media, and media owners, sponsors and supporters of sports in Nigeria,” he stated in a post on X/Twitter last night.
The National Stadium in Surulere, right in the heart of the mainland of Lagos, was built in 1972 and was the hub of Nigeian and African sports, hosting major tournaments including the All Africa Games in 1973, the Africa Cup of Nations in 1980 and 2000, and the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 1999.
However, it has fallen into disrepair over the last two decades and Dare began its redevelopment two years ago with the financial assistance of lottery magnate Chief Kessignton Adebutu.
