JANNIK Sinner has won the Australian Open men’s singles title after a tough battle with Daniil Medvedev in Melbourne.
The 22-year-old Italian came back from two sets down today to beat Medvedev 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 to claim his first-ever Grand Slam title.
Sinner, who stunned Novak Djokovic in the semi-final, is only the second Italian man in the Open era to claim a Grand Slam singles title after Adriano Panatta at the French Open in 1976.
At 22, Sinner has also become the youngest men’s Australian Open champion since a then 20-year-old Djokovic in 2008.
“Probably that’s not your last Grand Slam but hopefully I can get you in the next final,” Medvedev said while congratulating the new champion.
Despite the big victory, Sinner remains No.4 in the ATP Top 10 latest ranking, one spot below Medvedev.
Djokovic is No.1, followed by Carlos Alcaraz, with Andrey Rublev completing the top five.
