SPORTS minister John Enoh has commended the Super Eagles of Nigeria for finishing second in the AFCON 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and praised their captain William Troost-Ekong for emerging as the Player of the Tournament.

The three-time African champions were beaten 2-1 in the AFCON 2023 final by hosts Cote d’Ivoire last night.

The Super Eagles scored first through Troost-Ekong before Franck Kessie and Sebastian Haller turned it around for the Elephants in front of 60,000 home fans.

“We have reached the end of AFCON 2023, and I want to express my gratitude to the Super Eagles of Nigeria and the entire team who brought us this far. I applaud your commitment to winning, which led us to the final,” Enoh wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, today.

“Dear Super Eagles of Nigeria, you have won our hearts and evoked our admiration. We present you with your well-deserved accolades for standing for Nigeria until the end.

“We are proud of you. You took the silver, and we congratulate you and wish you all the best.

“Congratulations to William Troost Ekong, the player of the tournament AFCON 2023.

“Let us keep soaring!”

Centre-back Troost-Ekong showed exemplary leadership in the Super Eagles defence and scored three goals in regulation time and converted his penalty during the shootout victory over South Africa in the semi-final.
