THE Super Eagles of Nigeria have benefitted from their impressive run at the AFCON 2023 Africa Cup of Nations by climbing 14 places in the latest FIFA ranking released today.
The three-time African champions won five of their first six matches at the AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire to reach the final, where they lost 2-1 to the hosts on Sunday.
The Super Eagles are now 28th in the world after their biggest rise in recent years, and they have 1522 ranking points.
With the rise, which has taken Nigeria to their highest position in the last five years, the Super Eagles climbed above Tunisia, Algeria and Egypt to become third in Africa behind Morocco and Senegal.
Meanwhile, new African champions Cote d’Ivoire rose 10 places to 39th in the world, while Angola, who lost to Nigeria in the AFCON 2023 quarter-finals, are the biggest climbers in the global ranking, moving 24 places to 93rd in the world.
Qatar, who retained their Asian Cup title this month, gained the most points globally with 92 and rose 21 spots to 37th in the world.
Other impressive performers are Equatorial Guinea (79th, up 9), South Africa (58th, up 8), Cape Verde (65th, up 8), Namibia (107th, up 8) and Mali (47th, up 4).
There are no changes in the top 10 with world champions Argentina leading the way.
