ALL of the six Team Nigeria athletes that reached the finals in women’s wrestling at the African Games In Accra, Ghana remarkably won gold medals tonight after Anuoluwapo Opeyori began the gold rush in badminton.
Mercy Genesis was the first of the ‘golden women’ as she defeated Egypt’s Nada Mohamed 7-0 in the 50kg freestyle category.
Next up was Christiana Ogunsanya who dominated her opponent from Cote d’Ivoire, Bakayoko, and convincingly won the final 11-0 to clinch gold in the 53kg category.
The great Odunayo Adekuoroye followed and wrapped her gold medal match up in only 24 seconds, defeating Morocco’s Zineb Hassoune by fall in the 57kg event.
Esther Kolawole and Olympic silver medallist Blessing Oborududu also cruised to gold medals in their respective events, with the former winning in the 62kg category and the latter victorious in 68kg.
Hannah Reuben rounded off the golden night with Team Nigeria’s
sixth gold medal in women’s wrestling, beating Cote d’Ivoire’s Amy Youin 10-0.
Meanwhile, Opeyori had won Team Nigeria’s first gold medal at the Games earlier after defeating his compatriot Godwin Olofua in the final of the men’s singles badminton event.
