VICTOR Osimhen was on target today in the Serie A for Napoli but the champions were held to a 2-2 draw at home to struggling Frosinone.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria striker netted Napoli’s second goal as they hoped to boost their slim top four chances but the plucky visitors pulled level to claim a share of the points.
Napoli were indeed ahead twice and were each time pegged back by Morocco striker Walid Cheddira, who is incidentally on loan at Frosinone from the Serie A champions.
Matteo Politano opened the scoring for Napoli in the 16th minute with a brilliant goal, cutting inside from the right to bend a left-foot finish into the top corner from the edge of the Frosinone box.
The visitors were presented with a golden chance for a quick response when they were awarded a penalty for a foul on Cheddira.
Matias Soule took the spot kick in the 30th minute but it was saved by Alex Meret in the Napoli goal.
Osimhen, the top scorer in the Italian top flight last season with 26 goals as Napoli won their first Serie A title in 33 years, put his side ahead again.
The Nigeria international, who had cut his hand during an early collision with goalkeeper Stefano Turati and missed a good chance in the first half, netted a poacher’s goal to give Napoli the lead.
When Kvicha Kvaratskhelia’s shot was deflected, it turned into an assist for Osimhen, who stretched out a leg to poke home from six yards out in the 63rd minute.
Osimhen, despite a campaign disrupted by injuries and participation in the Africa Cup of Nations, has now scored 13 goals and made three assists in 20 Serie A appearances this season.
That lead did not last more than 10 minutes though as Cheddira struck again against his parent club, netting with a free header.
Napoli, who are on their third head coach of a disappointing season, are eighth in the Series A table, 10 points adrift of fourth-placed Bologna with just six matches to go, while Frosinone are third from bottom.
