CHAMPIONS: Inter Milan clinch 20th Serie A title

INTER Milan defeated AC Milan 2-1 at San Siro tonight to win the 2023/2024 Serie A title.

The new champions have now won the Italian top flight title 20 times, making them only the second club after Juventus to reach that figure.

Inter can now wear two stars on their jersey in Serie A tradition.

In Italian football, a star is a permanent feature on the jersey for every 10 Serie A titles won by a club and so far only Juventus have been able to wear more than one.

It was a race between the Milan clubs to reach the magic number, as they were both on 19 titles going into this season, but Inter got there first thanks to tonight’s victory.

Francesco Acerbi and Marcus Thuram netted for Inter Milan tonight, with England centre-back with Nigerian heritage Fikayo Tomori pulling one back for AC Milan, who were technically tonight’s hosts at the shared San Siro.

With the victory, Inter opened a 17-point gap at the top of the table with five games to go, meaning it is impossible for second-placed AC Milan to catch up with them.

This is Inter Milan manager Simone Inzaghi’s first Scudetto of his coaching career, having previously won the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana at both his present club and Lazio.

Inter have been top of the table for almost the entire season, and they have equalled Napoli’s record for the earliest a team has won the title, securing top spot after only 33 matches.

They will however not be able to match the all-time record of 102 Serie A points set by Antonio Conte’s Juventus, with the maximum they can achieve being 101 if they win all their remaining five matches.

Inter have lost only once in 33 matches this season (2-1 at home to Sassuolo in September), winning 27 and drawing five.
