CHAD: PM Succes Masra tenders resignation to newly elected Junta Chief

CHADIAN Prime Minister Succes Masra tendered is resignation today, less than two weeks after losing the presidential election to junta head Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno.

“I’ve just submitted my resignation and that of the transition government, which became irrelevant with the end of the presidential election,” Masra said on his Facebook page in a message authenticated by his team to AFP.

He said that the move was also constitutionally sound.

Deby, 40, was declared interim president by a junta of 15 generals in April 2021, after his father, iron-fisted President Idriss Deby Itno, was assassinated by rebels after 30 years in office.

According to the final results, he won the presidential election on May 6 with 61% of the vote.

Masra, also 40 and a fierce Deby opponent before becoming prime minister four months ago, received 18.5% of the vote but challenged the results.

He claimed victory in the election, which his party described as a “masquerade” and international rights organisations argued was neither credible nor fair.
