WORLD record holder Tobi Amusan, Tokyo 2020 medallist Ese Brume and rising star Favour Ofili have all been included in Team Nigeria’s squad to represent the country in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The Athletics Federation of Nigeria named a contingent of 35 athletes to represent the country in track and field at the Games, with women’s 100m hurdles world record holder Amusan and Olympic bronze medallist in women’s long jump Brume the brightest medal prospects.
Ofili, the 21-year-old sprinter who has risen to fame in the last two years in the American collegiate circuit, will hope to excel in the women’s 100m, 200m and 4×100m relays.
Favour Ashe, Godson Brume and Kayinsola Ajayi will race in the men’s 100m event, while Udodi Onwuzurike will compete in the 200m, with Chidi Okezie and Samuel Ogazi running in the men’s 400m.
Edose Ibadin will represent Nigeria in the 800m, and Ezekiel Nathaniel will feature in the 400m hurdles.
In the field events, Prosper Chinecherem and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi will compete in the men’s javelin and shot put respectively.
For the women, apart from Ofili, the other sprinters are Rosemary Chukwuma and Tima Godbless, who will represent Nigeria in the 100m and 200m events, while Ella Onojuvwevwo and Esther Elo Joseph will compete in the 400m.
Ruth Usoro and Prestina Ochonogor will join Brume in the long jump, with Temitope Adesina in the high jump and Sade Olatoye in the hammer throw event.
Overall, Nigeria will participate in 19 disciplines, which also include the mixed 4x400m relay.
Athletics at the Paris 2024 Olympics will begin on August 1.
