TODAY, I honour an extraordinary man, a literary icon affectionately known as Uncle B, Mr. Ben Tomoloju, on the momentous occasion of his 70th birthday.

My journey with Uncle Ben began in my teenage years when he graced the halls of Saka Tinubu Memorial High School, Orile Agege, Lagos as a dedicated teacher. It was there that he ignited the spirit of creativity and community by founding the Kakaaki Group/Troupe, a beacon for students and youths in our neighborhood.

Life took a turn for my family after the passing of my father, Rufus Ekundayo Olomu, in 1973. We transitioned from a life of affluence in Abeokuta Street, Ebute Metta, to a more humble existence in Orile Agege in 1975. A poignant reminder of Uncle B’s legacy is the Olofunmilayo Bus Stop, named in honour of his mother, who nurtured young minds at Olufunmilayo Nursery and Primary School. Following in her footsteps, Uncle B embraced the role of an educator, touching countless lives while fostering talent and ambition through Kakaaki.

After his impactful years in education, Uncle B ventured into journalism with the Guardian Newspaper, where he ascended to the role of Art Editor, showcasing his unwavering commitment to the arts. As I embarked on my own career as the Promotions Manager at Polygram Records, now Premier Music at 26, Uncle B stood as a pillar of support, championing my endeavors and nurturing the artists I represented.

On this significant milestone of his 70th birthday, I want to honour Uncle B, to celebrate his life, and to give him the flowers he so richly deserves while he is here with us. Happy 70th birthday, Sir.

As we commemorate this special day, I pray for your continued health, happiness, and fulfillment. May the years ahead be filled with joy, surrounded by love and admiration from all whose lives you have touched. May you be blessed with wisdom, strength, and the warmth of cherished memories, forever reminding you of the profound impact you have made.
