My art is not only a tribute, but a bridge — connecting generations through marks scorched, stained, and shaded by memory. I prepared these works as a dialogue between the past and the present, a reflection on traditions and customs inherited and trends reimagined

FROM May 11 through June 14, 2025, Kokopeli Gallery on Ademola Street, Ikoyi, Lagos, will host “What Endures, What Fades,” a solo exhibition by Ronke Komos, an Abuja-based artist.
The exhibition “reflects on the cultural identity in motion, questioning how we evolve without erasing ourselves,” states the gallery.
It is also “a space of memory, transformation and conversation, a moment to stand at the crossroads of past and future, to celebrate, question, and redefine tradition in a world that is always moving forward.”
In her artist’s statement, Ronke Komos, submits:

“My art is not only a tribute, but a bridge — connecting generations through marks scorched, stained, and shaded by memory. I prepared these works as a dialogue between the past and the present, a reflection on traditions and customs inherited and trends reimagined.
“Each piece captures not just an image, but a legacy, a truth, a reality.
“Using unconventional materials like coffee, charcoal, and fire, I hope to evoke your senses, and transport you to familiar conversations that have helped shape those quiet, powerful customs handed down from one generation to the other.
“Each piece is relatable, each piece looks familiar, smells familiar……Because you were right there.”
