PRESIDENT Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his dedication to democratic principles and the rule of law in Nigeria, describing himself as a “die-hard democrat” committed to protecting the country’s democratic system.

The President made the remarks during an interfaith breaking of the fast held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja with members of the National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and leaders of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC).

Speaking at the gathering, Tinubu reflected on Nigeria’s democratic journey, noting that many political actors had made sacrifices over the past 26 years to sustain democratic governance.

He recalled that some activists endured detention, participated in protests and demonstrations, and even went into exile during the struggle for democracy.

He also referenced the role of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), a pro-democracy group formed during the military era.

According to the President, his commitment to democracy has remained steadfast throughout his political journey.

He said the principle of a united Nigeria under democratic governance continues to guide his leadership and would remain a lifelong conviction.

Tinubu further stressed that the nation’s unity and stability depend largely on good governance.

He assured political leaders present that his administration would continue to uphold these values for the benefit of future generations.

The President also highlighted the importance of strengthening internal democracy within political parties, noting that credible electoral systems rely heavily on transparent and participatory party processes.

He added that the adoption of direct primaries could give party members greater influence in choosing their representatives at different levels of governance.

Emphasising the importance of democratic norms, Tinubu stated that no democrat should feel threatened under his leadership and reiterated that the rule of law must always prevail.

He noted that in a democracy, the majority should be allowed to make decisions while the minority must also retain the right to express their views.

The President also reaffirmed his loyalty to the APC, stating that he remains a registered member of the party and intends to continue working within its platform.

Reflecting on his political past, he noted that even when party decisions did not favour him, he accepted the outcomes and remained committed to the democratic process.

During the meeting, APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda praised Tinubu for what he described as strong leadership and effective management of Nigeria’s diverse human and material resources.

He assured the President of the party’s continued support in pursuing his vision for the country.

Meanwhile, IPAC Chairman Yusuf Dantalle appealed to the President to reconsider the requirement for a National Identity Number (Nigeria) (NIN) in the voter registration process.

He warned that such a condition could potentially prevent many eligible Nigerians from participating in elections.

Dantalle also raised concerns about the removal of the indirect method of party nominations in the newly enacted Nigeria Electoral Act 2026, while calling for the restoration of financial support from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to political parties.

According to the statement, the IPAC chairman also informed the President that a documentary titled “Unbroken Democracy”, highlighting Nigeria’s 26 years of democratic governance, had been produced with support from Hope Uzodimma, Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, and is expected to premiere soon at the State House.
