ADC moves ahead with convention plans despite leadership dispute — Nwosu

A founding member of the African Democratic Congress, Ralph Nwosu, has stated that the party will proceed with its scheduled congresses and national convention despite its ongoing leadership crisis.

Speaking to newsmen, Nwosu said the party remains focused on its preparations for the 2027 elections and will not allow the dispute or actions by the Independent National Electoral Commission to disrupt its plans.

According to him, the party has already submitted its programme in line with electoral laws, and its congresses are underway, with the national convention expected to validate its activities.

His comments follow INEC’s decision not to recognise either of the rival leadership factions within the party—one linked to David Mark and the other to Nafiu Bala pending a court ruling.

The leadership crisis stems from Nwosu’s resignation in 2025, which paved the way for a new executive committee.

However, Bala challenged this transition in court, claiming he should have automatically assumed leadership.

The matter is currently before the judiciary, with previous rulings maintaining the status quo until a final decision is reached.

Despite this, Nwosu insisted the party would continue its internal processes and notify INEC accordingly.

He added that if necessary, the party would publicly communicate its activities through the media.

Meanwhile, tensions have escalated between the party and electoral authorities.

Members of the ADC, alongside prominent opposition figures including Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi, Aminu Tambuwal, and Rauf Aregbesola, recently protested at INEC’s headquarters in Abuja, demanding a reversal of its decision and the resignation of its leadership.

The protesters also accused President Bola Tinubu of attempting to push Nigeria towards a one-party system—an allegation both the presidency and INEC have denied.

Presidential spokesperson Sunday Dare dismissed the claims, maintaining that all registered political parties remain free to participate in upcoming elections.
