NIGERIA’S Acting Ambassador to South Africa, Temitope Ajayi, has assured that Nigerians living in the country are not under immediate threat despite recent xenophobic tensions.
Speaking during an interview, Ajayi explained that the situation is under control, with both the Nigerian and South African governments working together to maintain safety and protect all residents, including foreigners.
His remarks follow reports of anti-foreigner protests and isolated incidents of violence in cities such as Durban, Cape Town, and East London, where some foreign-owned businesses were targeted.
Ajayi described the unrest as limited and not a coordinated attack on Nigerians. He emphasized that authorities have taken steps to contain the situation, with calm reported in key areas like Pretoria and Johannesburg.
He also dismissed a viral video suggesting foreigners were being blocked from accessing a building, noting that the individuals involved do not represent the broader South African population.
Meanwhile, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission has issued safety advisories, urging Nigerians in South Africa to remain cautious, follow local laws, and limit movement where necessary.
Overall, the envoy reassured citizens that there is no widespread targeting of Nigerians, while encouraging vigilance as authorities continue to monitor and manage the situation.
