THE Abia State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of officers captured in a viral video alleging police misconduct in Uturu, Abia State.

In a statement issued yesterday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, the command disclosed that an investigation was launched immediately after the video surfaced online.

According to the statement, the complainant involved in the incident was contacted, while the officers seen in the footage were identified, tracked, and taken into custody.

The police authorities further revealed that the Commissioner of Police had directed the State Criminal Investigation Department to investigate the officers for possible disciplinary and administrative action.

The command assured residents that the public would be updated on the outcome of the investigation.

Reaffirming the command’s stance on professionalism and accountability, the commissioner stated that officers are expected to maintain discipline, civility, and respect for human rights while carrying out their lawful duties.

He stressed that acts of impunity and misconduct would not be tolerated, in line with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police to build a more citizen-friendly police force.

The viral video, reportedly recorded in Umuahia, showed a police officer at a checkpoint questioning a commuter over possession of three mobile phones.

The commuter, who filmed the encounter, challenged the officer for not wearing a name tag, arguing that he could not properly identify him.

Another officer objected to being recorded, while the first officer reportedly responded in pidgin, saying he was not afraid of being filmed.

The situation later escalated after the commuter threatened to contact the Inspector-General of Police, leading to a confrontation between both parties.
