A student of the University of Benin, whose identity has yet to be confirmed, was reportedly shot dead by suspected gunmen yesterday night near the institution’s main gate at Ugbowo, Edo State.
According to eyewitness accounts, the victim was driving a JLK Mercedes-Benz out of the campus when masked attackers ambushed the vehicle and opened fire at close range before fleeing the scene.
Sources disclosed that the deceased had completed an examination in the Department of Political Science roughly an hour before the attack occurred.
Two other occupants of the vehicle sustained injuries during the incident and were immediately taken to the University of Benin Health Centre for treatment.
A student who witnessed the aftermath of the attack said the victim had little chance of survival due to the severity of the shooting, while the injured passengers were rushed for urgent medical attention.
Security operatives from the Ugbowo Divisional Police Headquarters later arrived at the scene and evacuated the victim’s body.
Speaking on the incident, the Divisional Police Officer, SP Emmanuel, stated that details surrounding the attack were still unclear at the time of filing the report.
As of the time of this report, the Edo State Police Command had yet to release an official statement regarding the killing.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident on campus, another student reportedly escaped unharmed after being chased with a machete near the Social Science Lecture Theatre on Saturday.
