AT least 11 passengers have reportedly lost their lives following a fatal road accident along the Abeokuta-Lagos Expressway in Ogun State on yesterday night.
The tragic incident occurred around Eruku Bridge when a gold Toyota vehicle bearing registration number GGE722KJ allegedly somersaulted before plunging off the bridge, trapping all occupants inside the wreckage.
Reports revealed that the victims comprised 10 adult men and one woman, all of whom died at the scene.
Confirming the development today, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Odunsi Afolabi, disclosed that preliminary investigations pointed to driving under the influence and overloading as the likely causes of the crash.
According to Afolabi, the vehicle overturned and fell from the bridge, with the impact locking the doors and leaving the passengers trapped inside.
He explained that FRSC officials, assisted by residents of the area, had to dismantle parts of the vehicle to recover the bodies of the victims.
The remains were later deposited at the State Specialist Hospital morgue in Ifo.
The FRSC spokesperson added that the Ogun State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, urged motorists travelling along the Abeokuta-Lagos corridor to drive carefully, especially at night, while also extending condolences to the families of those who died in the accident.
