The event will also feature a recognition and awards ceremony during which medals of honour and appreciation will be presented to founding members of NADECO, affiliate organisations, media houses, journalists, human rights activists, and diplomatic missions that supported Nigeria’s democratic struggle.
THE National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) has announced plans to hold its 2026 Special Day Event on May 20 in Lagos as part of efforts to preserve the history of Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle and honour individuals and institutions that defended democratic rule.
Speaking at a pre-event press conference on Thursday, NADECO General Secretary and Spokesman, Pa Ayo Opadokun, said the event would take place at Shell Hall, MUSON Centre, Onikan, Lagos, beginning at 11 a.m.
Opadokun described the gathering as more than a ceremonial occasion, saying it would serve as a moment of reflection, remembrance, and recommitment to democratic ideals for which many Nigerians made sacrifices.
According to him, one of the major highlights of the programme will be the launch of The NADECO Story, a publication documenting the coalition’s struggles, resilience, and sacrifices during Nigeria’s turbulent political era between 1994 and 1998.
He said the book would serve as both a historical record and a guide for future generations on the value and cost of democracy.
The event will also feature a recognition and awards ceremony during which medals of honour and appreciation will be presented to founding members of NADECO, affiliate organisations, media houses, journalists, human rights activists, and diplomatic missions that supported Nigeria’s democratic struggle.
“These recognitions are long overdue acknowledgements of courage, integrity and unwavering commitment to justice and democratic governance,” Opadokun said.
He added that the programme would also commemorate the resistance mounted against authoritarian rule between 1994 and 1998, which helped pave the way for the return to democratic governance.
Opadokun said the objectives of NADECO Day 2026 include preserving the historical memory of the pro-democracy movement, honouring those who stood against repression, educating younger Nigerians on sacrifices made for freedom, and reinforcing vigilance in protecting democratic values.
He stressed that democracy remains a continuous process requiring constant protection and renewal.
The NADECO spokesman also called on the media to continue playing its constitutional role as a watchdog of society, while urging journalists to uphold professionalism and ethical standards amid challenges posed by the rise of social media.
He reaffirmed NADECO’s commitment to justice, accountability, rule of law, and true federalism.
“The story we are launching is not just about the past; it is a living narrative that challenges all Nigerians to defend and deepen democracy,” he said.
