SUPER Eagles of Nigeria defender Zaidu Sanusi has admitted that it is strange for ten teams from Africa to be at the World Cup without the three-time African champions being one of them.
Sanusi and his Super Eagles colleagues will not be part of the 48-team tournament in the United States of America, Mexico and Canada following their African play-offs final defeat to Democratic Republic of Congo.
”I must say it’s not normal to have ten teams in Africa without Nigeria. It has happened and we have to ensure that it doesn’t happen again. We need to take our spot as the giants of Africa and make it count next time,” the Porto star told the SuperEagles media team.
Sanusi is looking forward to the friendly game against Portugal coming up on Wednesday, after playing the entire second half of the 2-2 draw against Poland three days ago.
”I will be at home in a way and hopefully we get the result that will be good for our morale going forward,” he added.
The Super Eagles have no failed to qualify for back-to-back World Cups for the first time since making their debut in 1994.
Africa will be represented at the 2026 World Cup by DR Congo, Cote d’Ivoire, Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, Cape Verde, Tunisia, South Africa, Ghana and Senegal.
